Meet Michael! He’s a budding game developer who works with instructor Dilan as part of Game-U’s Accelerate program. For the last few weeks, he’s been building a game that challenges the nigh-unbeatable chocolate-and-peanut butter combination. Check out his creation! It’s a match to melt dog and game lovers’ hearts.
When Dilan introduced Michael to Unity, a professional-level gaming engine used to create all kinds of games (including virtual reality games), Michael blew Dilan away with how quickly he took to the engine. Michael not only selected the game’s artwork (the dog, the bones, the squirrels, and the balls), but also programmed everything himself! The object of Michael’s game is for the player – that’s the dog, of course – to collect all the bones and balls in the level. Each collected ball or bone adds points to the player’s score, which Michael coded to live-update and display in the top right of the screen. Pressing space makes the dog bark, an important feature, because barking scares off squirrels (an important canine duty that the Universal Dog’s Creed demands good dogs never neglect), and scaring off all five squirrels means the player progresses to another level. (Michael’s still working on that code.) If the player’s affinity lies with another dog breed, pressing X switches to different doggie artwork. Watch the video to see how to play through the level!
Michael, there’s no escaping it – we love your game. Awesome work planning the design, learning Unity, adding code, and yes, making the finished product irresistible. Let us know when your game is available for us to play!
