Meet Hunter! Hunter’s part of our Accelerate program at Game-U, and he works with Jason, one of our instructors, to build his game design skills. Ever imagine yourself developing games on a professional-level gaming engine? Ever dream about the possibilities of virtual reality? Hunter’s making those dreams come alive! He and Jason recently began exploring Unreal, that professional-level gaming engine, which uses C++ (a computer programming language) to create some incredible stuff. Together, Hunter and Jason explored the Unreal interface and figured out how it differed from other gaming engines Hunter knows. Jason explained what all the different editor windows do, how Hunter can use special brushes to model out a room in the game, how lights in the game can be created and adjusted, and what basic materials Hunter can use to build. Hunter put all this knowledge together to get a really cool game started! Remember the lava world, Mustafar, where Obi-wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker had that fateful battle? Hunter’s new game world looks a bit like that! Since Hunter’s keen to create a 3D platformer, he and Jason made a lava material to apply to the playing space floor. The player’s challenge is to navigate the space without falling into the lava. That’s where the platforms come in – Hunter and Jason will add them in next week so that the player can use the platforms to reach his goal, while still avoiding the lava. That player will have to stay on his toes, because Hunter and Jason won’t make this game easy! Check out the game video.
