Meet Jade! She works with instructor Mike M. as part of Game-U’s Accelerate program. Ever built a castle in the air? Sure, all of us have! But Jade takes her castles and turns them into game designs.
Castles rise high, but they also dig down deep. Jade’s all about deep. With Mike M.’s help, she’s developing her skills as a modeler, designing a castle dungeon from scratch. Her goal is an isometric dungeon crawler game, and she’s using Unity, a professional-level gaming engine, and Blender, a modeling tool, to achieve it. Blender lets Jade create “game pieces,” called modular assets, that will form the dungeon environment. Here again, Jade digs deep, snapping her modular assets together to make more complex objects – which requires special care on the designer’s part. Modular assets fit together perfectly when positioned correctly, but offset one of them, or rotate an asset in the wrong direction, and the finished product is left with gaps or overhanging edges. The devil’s in the details! Check out Jade’s most recent asset. She’s constructed an arched roof for the dungeon passageways, and she spent most of her class time building out her level. An isometric dungeon crawler game is officially in the works!
It’s great to meet you, Jade, and you do awesome work. Keep us updated on your progress. We’re looking forward to playing your finished game!
