Meet Jason! He’s working with instructor Michael L. as part of Game-U’s Accelerate program. Jason’s got several games to his credit now, and he keeps creating new projects to share with his family and friends. Take a peek at his latest brainchild!
Like Michael L.’s student Ryan, Jason uses Construct 2, a 2D gaming engine that’s very user-friendly. He experiments with a range of game genres, including platformers, beat ’em ups, old school classics, and now racing. Jason created a track in Construct 2 that features characters Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi, who have obstacles to avoid and turns to navigate as they compete so see who can finish all his laps first. While human beings could navigate this track (and the future tracks Jason’s planning on adding) easily, without any special training or equipment – except maybe sneakers – computers need a little something extra. Jason animated his characters using the Construct 2 tools to first make them move, then turn the right way, and finally run laps. Check out the video! Driving isn’t easy, but Jason’s at the wheel, pulling the game animations together step by step. Notice Luigi’s figure-eights! Next class, Jason wants to finish up Yoshi’s animations so he can play the game, too. Also on Jason’s to-do list is an end screen, a game menu, and of course those other racetracks.
Great work, Jason! You’re a hard worker who churns out games. Keep it up! We’ll be waiting for your next status update, which we hear will include a way to play your basball brick break game. Happy Thanksgiving!
