Meet Landy! He’s paired up with instructor Cameron as part of Game-U’s Accelerate program. Landy usually works in the Unreal Engine, building sidescrollers or roll-a-ball mazes, but recently he and Cameron decided to branch into 3D modeling with Blender.
Landy’s a fan of the Kingdom Hearts game, so when he looked for modeling inspiration, keyblades were an easy choice. Landy and Cameron settled on the default keyblade and set their design sights high – they wanted to replicate an authentic-looking keyblade with as much detail as possible. So Landy pulled up Blender, the 3D modeling program, and got started on the key blade project. Because he’s so interested in producing a quality model, Landy started off small, creating only the shaft and part of the hilt before the lesson ended.

In a later class, Landy and Cameron tackled the keyblade project again, this time adding more detail. Landy even got creative with the design. His version of a Kingdom Hearts keyblade looks even cooler than the one from the game! Using Blender’s modeling tools, and especially bevels, Landy added an elaborate handle to the shaft. Next up, the key itself! Cameron’s proud of how comfortable Landy’s become working with Blender.
Great job, Landy! You’ve put together a professional-looking design that stirs the imagination. Whether you use it in a game or just to hone your skills, we’re looking forward to the finished product. Stay in touch. We want to hear about all your projects!
