Remember Nicholas? He’s teamed up with instructor Mike M. as part of our Accelerate program. Using Project Spark, a program that allows students to build 3D worlds and games, Nicholas built a 3D platformer game that he keeps improving. Know anything about mechanics? Normally, “mechanics,” means either people who know machines, or the science behind how machine parts fit together to accomplish a goal. Game mechanics are what make games work. Giving a player the ability to shoot, creating a scoreboard to keep track of game progress, and putting an object (like a platform) in motion are all examples of game mechanics – they make the game work! Nicholas added a new mechanic to his game by making the jumping platforms narrower. Then, he combined the new narrow platforms with the old moving platform mechanic, so that the result is an even more challenging game! Flynn Rider (that’s the player’s nickname) has to successfully jump from moving platform to moving platform, like before, but since Nicholas made the platforms smaller, he has even smaller targets on which to land. Oh, and a super small checkpoint, too. But Nicholas didn’t stop there! He keeps adding new features to every part of his game. Check out the video to see for yourself! Nicholas also decided to code a limited lives game mechanic, which resets the whole game if you lose too many lives trying to complete the jumping course – or defeat the dragon. Nicholas has plans for that dragon. Coming soon, some custom Project Spark Kode is going to make the dragon a real Boss enemy! Keep us informed, Nicholas. You’re not just adding game mechanics. You’re a game mechanic yourself!
