Alexa’s Story: Growth and Creativity Through 2D Art Classes

For Alexa, a passionate young artist, and her mom, Paige, these classes became a personalized journey rooted in expert instruction, flexibility, and genuine care. Through purposeful projects, Alexa sharpened her skills and gained independence, resilience, and the confidence to take creative risks. This is her story.
Piskel Perfect Personalization
In a recent interview, Paige shared her perspective as both a parent and former teacher. Her daughter, Alexa, has been a GameU student since October 2021. Working closely with her instructor, Ben, she’s honed her 2D art skills using Piskel. But it’s not the skills development Paige appreciates most. No. It’s the deeply personalized learning experience Alexa receives:
“One of the things I love about GameU, and I always tell other parents of special needs individuals, [is] that GameU does cater exactly to what Alexa needs and wants,” Paige shared.
This flexible, student-centered approach aligns with the research-based Universal Design for Learning framework, which helps us tailor goals, materials, and methods to each learner.
Meeting Students Where They Are
From the beginning, our mission at GameU has been to meet students where they are and guide them forward – regardless of learning style, pace, or previous experience. Paige’s words reinforce this ethos: GameU is a place where students don’t have to adapt to a rigid structure. Instead, the structure flexes to support them.
As Paige put it: “Every person is unique, every individual is unique, especially people with special needs. They have different interests. They have different wants and desires.”
Whether it’s 2D art, coding, animation, or game design, we created our curriculum and mentorship to build off students’ existing skills and goals – just like Alexa’s growing portfolio of pixel art creations. Through each session, Alexa is not just practicing software skills – she’s gaining confidence, direction, and a sense of ownership over her work.
This learner-first approach aligns with differentiated instruction in art education, a proven strategy where teaching methods, materials, and pacing are customized to each student’s readiness, interest, and learning profile.
As students gain creative independence and agency, they also develop the Studio Habits of Mind, such as persisting, envisioning, reflecting, and developing craft—dispositions that help learners think and work like artists in real-world contexts.
The People Behind the Program
Behind every success story at GameU, there’s an instructor who makes it possible. For Alexa, that’s Ben Siegel. According to Paige, Ben possesses “people skills that can’t be taught” – an invaluable quality when it comes to working with students who need both technical guidance and additional learning support.
“He keeps Alexa engaged. He allows her to explore her creativity, but pushes her just a little bit, right? Ben also has skills that can’t be taught… he has amazing people skills.”
Ben has been a teacher at GameU for over seven years and brings professional experience from across the game design industry. But what truly makes Ben exceptional is his ability to connect with students, read their needs, and empower them to grow. His patient, people-first teaching style helps students like Alexa stretch just beyond their comfort zones – right where true learning happens.
A Message to Other Parents
Perhaps the most powerful part of Paige’s message is her recommendation to other parents—particularly those raising children with special needs.
