Level Design
Our virtual Adventurer Game Design class is recommended for kids 6-8 years old and is perfect for kids who are interested in learning game design basics. We use Scratch, a kid-friendly and web-based game engine developed by MIT, to teach coding, and we also cover topics like logic flow, digital art, sound implementation, and more.
At the end of each 8-week unit, students will have finished their own game and gained many new skills!
Prerequisites:
None
- Recommend a minimum 10 Mbps and 10 Mbps (up/down) internet speed.
- 2 or 3-button mouse with scroll wheel will enhance experience in all classes (Recommended, not required).
- Microphone + Speaker or Headset with Mic and (optional, but preferred) a video camera.
- A minimum of 3 GB free storage on your computer is recommended for most classes. Voyager+ (and Video Editing) level classes require a minimum of 10 GB of free storage space.
- Chromebook, PC (Windows 7, 8, 10, 11) or Mac with at least 8 GB of RAM.

Explorers graduate from Scratch and begin designing their games in Construct 3, a web-based game engine that unlocks unlimited design possibilities. We’ll introduce boolean logic and digital animation, and we’ll touch on topics like physics and particle effects.
At the end of each two-month unit, students will have a finished game they can play and share along with a handful of new skills!

Intermediate Design Techniques
This class builds on previous game design skills plus introduces kids to the world of 3D game development using professional-level tools. Students will use Unity(with C#), a 3D game engine that thousands of popular games use today, to craft experiences in the third dimension.
The Voyager classes will introduce topics such as collections, materials, lighting, and 3D modeling.
At the end of each two-month unit, students will have a finished game that feels unlike anything else they've made before!

Advanced Design Techniques
In this advanced level class, students will expand their knowledge on all aspects of game development as they explore programming, level design, textures, shaders, particles, and more.
They’ll also learn 3D modeling in Blender and Maya, craft their own programs in C#, blast into audio design with Audacity and GarageBand, and use Unity 3D to create and publish their own game!
This ongoing class is designed to help students develop the skills they need to become independent game developers!

Students will learn to use GameMaker 2, a fully-featured 2D game engine, to further expand on their existing knowledge of the 2D game design space. They’ll also get an introduction to topics such as functions, looping, and object parenting.
At the end of each two-month unit, students will have a finished game that can be published on a storefront such as itch.io and played by anyone!
